Outline

Biotechnology and Genetics is designed for 13–15-year-olds who are interested in the science behind genetics and modern biotechnology. Students will explore key breakthroughs in medicine, pharmacology, and agriculture, learning about cell biology, genetic engineering, and the ethical questions raised by these technologies. They’ll gain a solid foundation in biotechnology and genetics, understanding how these fields are changing the world and shaping the future. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on teamwork and collaboration, along with a reflection session to help students track their goals and progress.

Teaching methodology

Learning in a small group (no more than 8 students and often fewer) means that you get quality time with your teacher and ask as many questions as you like! Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and assign you practice tasks to build your knowledge and skills. You will also have an opportunity for group work, independent research, and homework assignments to be discussed in class. Small classes mean everyone gets to have their say, and students learn from debating with one another, as well as from their tutor.

How do I apply to ǶƵ?

Applying is easy! Follow these steps:

  1. Choose a Course: Select your subject, location, dates, and accommodation. You can add additional courses if you wish.
  2. Provide Student Info: Fill in your name, contact details, and a short personal statement about why you'd be a great fit.
  3. Enter School Info: Provide the name and address of your most recent school.
  4. Review & Submit: Double-check your details and submit your application.

Can I book more than one course?

Yes, you can book more than one course! During the application process, you will have the option to add additional courses either before or after your main course. The total price, including any additional courses, will be displayed before you proceed.

How can I set up a flexible payment plan?

After paying your deposit to secure your place, our admissions team will help you set up a bespoke payment plan. You can choose from options like monthly or bimonthly payments, and we will provide a detailed invoice outlining your instalment schedule. Learn more about payment plans.

What is the structure of the course?

The course is structured over two weeks, covering the basic principles of biotechnology, genetics, and their practical applications in laboratories.

Week 1: Introduction to Biotechnology and Genetics (Example)

  • Basic principles of molecular biology: DNA, genes, and genetic mutations.

How does ǶƵ ensure the safeguarding and wellbeing of students aged 13-15?

For students aged 13-15, ǶƵ takes safeguarding seriously. All staff are DBS-checked and trained in safeguarding policies. We offer 24/7 on-site security, with supervision and curfews to maintain a safe environment. Our safeguarding policies are designed to balance growing independence with necessary safety measures, ensuring students feel supported.

What happens if the course I want is full?

Since spaces are limited, once a course is full, we are unable to accept additional students. We recommend applying early to avoid disappointment.

How soon should I apply to secure my place?

We recommend applying as soon as possible. Spaces are in high demand, and many courses fill up well in advance. The earlier you apply, the better your chance of securing your preferred course dates and accommodation type.

Each course has a limited number of spaces available across multiple accommodation options—Plus, Superior, and Premier. With two-week courses running from 29 June to 30 August 2025, we recommend securing your spot early as spaces fill up quickly.

The ǶƵ experience

Get ready to explore the science behind life. On our Biotechnology and Genetics course for ages 13–15, your child will discover how genetics influences everything from health to evolution, and how biotechnology is revolutionising medicine, agriculture, and technology. They’ll learn about DNA, genetic modification, and cutting-edge research, while gaining hands-on experience with scientific principles. With no fixed curriculum, students are encouraged to share their interests when they apply, and our expert tutors will tailor the course to reflect those passions wherever possible.

With no more than 8 students per class (and often fewer), your child will enjoy personalised support and space for discussion and experimentation. Lessons are interactive and engaging, combining tutor-led teaching with group activities, practical tasks, and independent research. Directed study sessions allow students to reflect on what they’ve learned, complete assignments, and further explore the topics with guidance from on-course staff.

Beyond the classroom, students will take part in a rich summer school experience — from games and social events to excursions around Cambridge and a final graduation ceremony and disco. It’s a summer of scientific discovery, innovation, and personal growth.

While they study Biotechnology and Genetics this summer as part of our 13–15s programme, your child will stay at one of the Cambridge colleges where we host our courses. With shared living spaces, on-course staff for support, and a welcoming atmosphere, it’s the ideal place to study science in one of the world’s most prestigious academic cities.

Whether they’re discussing genetic research or exploring the beautiful city of Cambridge with new friends, it’s all part of the experience.

Accommodation

For students attending the Cambridge 13-15 course, accommodation is based on the selected tier. In the Classic Tier, students will stay in a single or twin room, with final room assignment confirmed by us at a later date. In the Plus Tier, students can select their preferred single or twin room.

Food and catering

Meals are provided on a full-board basis, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals are served at the accommodation or at local restaurants, providing a variety of options for students.

Dr Bethan M
PhD Plant Genetics, University of Cambridge - Bethan has worked on the cloning of genes from a fungus into yeast to study gene function; using bioinformatics to study evolutionary selection in the human genome and circadian clock genetics in plants. For her PhD, Bethan identified a mutant in the crop plant maize, identified the function of the underlying gene and studied the genetic errors within this mutant. She is currently researching the molecular machinery required for RNA silencing in a species of fungus. She carries out a lot of next generation sequencing of the genomes of fungal organisms, as well as sequencing RNA molecules.
Robert C
Robert specialises in Biotechnology, Biomedical Science, Machine Learning and Bioinformatics. He has contributed to a a computer-aided drug design project, using virtual screening to develop 15 compounds for testing to be inhibitors for an enzyme named NAAA. Currently, Robert's working on developing compounds that could be dual inhibitors of the dopamine D3 receptor and PPR- alpha receptor. His aim is to combine various generative machine learning techniques to make these compounds.
Dr Saroj V
PhD Molecular Pharmacology, University of Cambridge - After completing his PhD, Saroj stayed on in the Department of Pharmacology as a Postdoctoral Research Associate, researching the molecular mechanisms of drug transport by the human Breast Cancer Resistance protein alongside his teaching duties. Saroj is currently the Director of SKV Consultants ltd, a biotech start-up company. His eventual ambition is to develop a state-of-the-art breast cancer diagnostic test. He also continues to teach, striving to effectively engage with students from different backgrounds.
