Learning
Outline
Neuroscience is an advanced course designed for 18–24-year-olds who are deeply fascinated by the complexities of the human brain and eager to explore its intricate functions. Students will dive deep into the chemistry, structure, and operations of the brain, learning how it governs our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. The course offers an in-depth understanding of advanced topics such as the nervous system, cognitive functions, sensory processing, and neural development, all guided by experts in the field. Students will have the opportunity to investigate these areas through case studies and interactive discussions, developing both their theoretical knowledge and practical understanding. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking and research skills, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive seminars in small groups (no bigger than 8). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. Tutorials will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your work and feedback with your tutor and learn new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and letter of recommendation from your tutor.

Note: There are no additional fees for setting up a payment plan, and your place is secure once the deposit is paid.
The course is structured over two weeks, focusing on the anatomy and signalling of the nervous system, neurobiological research techniques, and neurodegenerative diseases.
Week 1: The Human Nervous System (Example)
- The central nervous system: Brain and spinal cord anatomy.
- Neuron structure and action potentials.
- Nervous system and endocrine system interactions.
Week 2: Neurodegenerative Diseases and Research Techniques (Example)
- Neurobiology of C. elegans and practical research.
- Genetic and neurodegenerative diseases affecting the nervous system.
- Nervous signalling in mental health conditions.
Note: This is an example structure. The actual content may vary depending on the tutor’s expertise and student preferences. Students will have the opportunity to discuss their learning goals with admissions to tailor the course.
By the end of the course, students may:
- Gain a deep understanding of the human nervous system, from neuron function to the endocrine interactions.
- Learn advanced neurobiological research techniques and apply them to practical experiments.
- Explore genetic and neurodegenerative diseases and how they affect neuronal signalling.
- Develop essay-writing and research skills through tutorials and independent study.
Note: Learning objectives may vary based on student interests, which will be discussed during the admissions process.
Students are encouraged to do pre-course preparation to maximise their learning. Suggested resources include:
Readings:
- Neuroanatomy, Central Nervous System ()Piaget's Theories and Educational Implications ()
Optional Extension:
- Research additional case studies on genetic diseases affecting the nervous system and the ethical considerations of neurobiological research.
Note: These are example resources. Specific materials may vary depending on tutor and student preferences. Students will be informed of the required materials in advance to allow enough time to prepare.
This course is designed to build on your existing academic foundation in neuroscience or related fields. It will enhance your understanding of neurobiological systems, research techniques, and neurodegenerative diseases, preparing you for advanced roles in neuroscience, medical research, or healthcare. You will develop practical skills in research, critical thinking, and data analysis, valuable for a career in the medical or scientific fields.
Note: Career exploration opportunities may vary based on the session and guest speaker availability.
You are expected to:
- Actively participate in seminars and tutorials.
- Complete independent research and tutorial assignments.
- Engage in discussions on neurobiological research techniques and diseases.
The course is designed to provide hands-on experience with neurobiological research and help you deepen your understanding of advanced neuroscience topics.
Note: The level of participation and engagement can be adapted to suit individual needs and preferences.
At ǶƵ, we understand that students aged 18-24 have different needs in terms of safeguarding. All staff are enhanced DBS-checked and trained in safeguarding policies. We maintain 24/7 on-site security, but with more independence allowed for this age group. Our policies are focused on ensuring safety while encouraging personal responsibility and autonomy.
We recommend applying as soon as possible. Spaces are in high demand, and many courses fill up well in advance. The earlier you apply, the better your chance of securing your preferred course dates and accommodation type.
Since spaces are limited, once a course is full, we are unable to accept additional students. We recommend applying early to avoid disappointment.
Each course has a limited number of places available across multiple accommodation options—Superior and Premier. With two-week courses running from 6 July to 2 August 2025, we recommend securing your spot early as spaces fill up quickly.
